Chapter Forty-Four

As soon as we were both sitting down, Barbara said, “How come they’re dead? They weren’t old. Did they get sick?”

“No, they didn’t get sick. They must’ve gotten killed. In Germany. By the Nazis. Didn’t you ever hear of Nazis?”

“Yeah. A little. It was in World War Two, right? When we were born. Tony was in the army. But it was the end of the war, and he didn’t have to fight or anything. What do the Nazis have to do with your father? And his wife?”

“My father lived in Germany. The Nazis lived in Germany. And they killed the Jews that lived there. Millions of Jews.”

“Millions? How come?”

“How come? Because they were Jewish. And because the Nazis were really bad people. I mean—”

“Is that what happened in Germany? Millions of Jews got killed?”

“Yeah. Didn’t you know that?”

“Yeah. No. Not exactly. Oh, man. What a bastard.”

“What? Who?”

“Tony. This one night, Tony came home madder than hell. And he says to my old lady that one of his bosses, Mr. Goldsomething, cut his hours. And Tony says, ‘That skinny little Yid. Too bad Germany lost the war. They had the right idea.’”

“He said the Nazis had the right idea?”

“Yeah. I didn’t know what he meant. But now I do. I told you Tony was a no-good bastard.
